REVIEW: WARRIOR
You might sense déjà vu when you come face-to-face with Gavin O’Conner’s tale of underdog turned prized fighter and it’s hard to look past the idea that Warrior is little more than a hybrid of The Fighter, Million Dollar Baby and the Rocky movies rolled into one. However, scratch beneath the clichéd exterior and you’ll discover something a little special with more depth.

Over the decades, the film industry has witnessed numerous technological advances. Some, it must be noted, stand out more than others. For example, growing up in the 70’s, you will more than likely remember the, what was at the time, epic SFX of Star Wars, or two decades later, the revolutionary bullet time breakthrough we see in The Matrix, as well as the mind blowing mechanics of Nolan’s rotating hotel corridor in last year’s Inception. The point being that these breakthroughs can define a film, which in turn, can define a cinematic era. Yet what if there were something that could stand the time of a century or generation or two? Cinema is a complex business. Seemingly straight forward, yet devilishly intricate, but when we view films we tend to, subconsciously or not, gratify the director. After all, he/she is the visionary. The sole creative mind behind an entire project. Aren’t they? In honesty there’s far more to film making than meets the eye. One cannot and should not gift complete appraisal to a Spielberg, a Scorsese or a Coen (or two)…
In all honesty this biopic tale of the late Brazilian F1 driver would be more aptly titled Senna versus Prost (as per the name of Malcolm Folley’s publication, The Story of the Most Deadly Rivalry in Formula One). The focus of this documentary from acclaimed film maker, Asif Kapadia, revolves around the real life, bitter rivalry and eventual hatred between two F1 greats. And just to make it clear, this is not, I repeat not a film just for racing enthusiasts…
I’ve made it no secret, as my fellow tweeters will confirm, that I disliked last nights L’Oreal sponsored National Movie Awards 2011 with a passion. And just to clarify, I’m not one of those pretentious film makers who exclusively indulges in indie cinema, but am the first to admit my love for many a mainstream film. I begrudgingly found myself sitting through the 2 hour ‘ceremony’ out of sheer fascination more than anything and below are just a few thoughts I simply had to get off my chest…
