REVIEW: TROLL HUNTER
Its existence has been known in the UK for just under a year now and with an imminent, albeit it, limited release, we can finally bear witness to one of the most intriguing films currently out there.Cinema has seen its fair share of ‘found-footage’ movies over the years, stemming from the iconic, micro-budgeted, The Blair Witch Project way back in ‘99. Its massive success inevitably spawned a host of imitators, with successes that include [REC] and Paranormal Activity (along with their respective sequels), which prove the genre still has potential.
REVIEW: COWBOYS & ALIENS
Earlier in the year I took a look at this summer’s potential big hitters. The three in question were Transformers: Dark of the Moon, which turned out to be one of the worst films of the year, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, in stark contrast was a massive surprise and, along with Super 8, remains my favourite of the summer months. The third was John Favreau’s genre hybrid, Cowboys & Aliens. Initial responses to the trailers were largely positive and were further backed by an impressive cast that could outdo many of its competitors.
REVIEW: CONAN THE BARBARIAN 3D
There’s no doubt a remake can gain masses of negativity, and that’s even before a camera begins to roll. Undeniably, Hollywood is rife with shoddy, unimaginative remakes in the hope of earning a quick buck. This doesn’t bare well for Marcus Nispel’s reworking of Arnie classic, Conan the Barbarian. Without intending to sound like a broken record, my views on the ‘r-word’ could drive me into a frenzied outburst, but after the recent rioting, I shall compose myself. Digression aside; a struggle presents itself when attempting to revamp an iconic film of the 80’s into something for the desensitised populous of 2011. A film that worked 30 years previous, won’t necessarily be well received today, especially as Conan warrants no justification for a remake, thus unashamedly jumps on the cash-in bandwagon…
Credit where it’s due, Michael Bay knows how to make an enticing trailer. I even previewed this -his third Transformers instalment- in my ‘Summer of Sci-Fi’ article back in April with a naive optimism that, after the abysmal efforts of Revenge of the Fallen, the final piece of the ‘robots in disguise’ trilogy would turn out well. After a string of big budget blockbusters to his name, it’s true that Bay knows what he’s doing when it comes to CGI, action and blowing the shit out of everything in sight, but by no means is this a solid basis for a respectable movie (see Revenge of the Fallen)…

There have been a string of X-Men movies spanning just over a decade. With a strong franchise birth in the form of X-Men and a brilliant follow up, X-2 really set the bar, yet were superseded by the disappointing X-3 and the abysmal Wolverinecatastrophes (the less said about those, the better). So it was with great skepticism that I attempted to prepare myself for this inevitable prequel. With Kick Ass director Matthew Vaughn at the helm, what first appears as a no hoper quickly morphs into something of optimism….
