REVIEW: WAR HORSE

With the release of War Horse comes a new year. It’s a film that will conveniently be fresh in everyone’s mind just in time for Oscar season. Do not mistake intention for coincidence, mind, as Spielberg emerges from a successful 2011 with Tin Tin to begin the year with his adaptation of the beloved 1982 novel penned by Michael Morpurgo, as well as the acclaimed theatrical play of the same name.

SHAME REVIEW
The breakthrough of 2011 may be awarded to Ryan Gosling, but dismissing the competition would be a vast oversight. Appearing in no less than five movies over the past year, including X-Men: First Class and Jane Eyre, Michael Fassbender is without doubt one of the brightest talents to emerge as of late.

REVIEW: BEST OF 2011
S0 2011 has proved another interesting year for the film industry. There have been highs, lows, massive disappointments, as well as the utterly bizarre (I’m looking at you Tom Six). It’s proven difficult to select a top 10, as there were some great films that just missed out.

REVIEW: PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3
The third and most expensive instalment of the series gets yet a new directorial partnership in the form of Catfish makers, Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost. However, a fresh set of eyes doesn’t necessarily constitute a more original approach. In fact, the latest offering is perhaps a little too familiar to the tried-and-test scares the former ones rely on.

The Sexy Moment: “Seriously?! It’s like you’re photoshopped!” wails Emma Stone when Gosling removes his shirt in Crazy, Stupid, Love. We’re not really sure why she’s complaining.
If It Was Frumpy: The abs would’ve been drawn on with permanent marker.

Would You Go Gay For Gosling?

Five Facts So Sexy And Amazing, You Just Might

1. Ryan Gosling lived with Justin Timberlake for two years.
Sorry, was that the sound of my ovaries swooning? The pair were both Mouseketeers for the Haus of Maus, so Gozzers bunked in with Timberlake’s family while they filmed the show. One can only imagine what went down during sleepovers with Britney and Christina…

2. Ryan Gosling turned down a place in the Backstreet Boys.
His friend AJ “Backstreet’s back ALRIGHT” McLean asked him to audition for his new boyband. Gozzers said no, because he’s all jazzy and moody and into moody jazz and stuff. He’s a nimble jazz guitarist, frequently heard wailin’ the blues round open mic nights in Hollywood, each minor cadence punctuated by the sound of girls fainting.

3. Ryan Gosling had a strict Mormon upbringing.
…Although presumably not strict enough to stop him parading around on telly in the Mickey Mouse Club. Good job, Mama Gosling. Mrs G also took him out of school because, like the best of us, Ryan was bullied relentlessly at high school. (They probably called him ‘Gozzers’.) Underdog made good? If this was facebook we’d like this.

4. Ryan Gosling bumped uglies with Sandra Bullock.
Back in 2002, Gozzers tried out the Mrs Robinson schtick with Miss Congeniality. (Sounds like a cross-genre epic tipped for greatness…) He was 22, she was 38. Let’s face it: Bullock taught him everything he knows. Oh hi!

5. Ryan Gosling stars in three excellent films in 2011.
- Drive (excellent)
- Crazy Stupid Love (excellent)
The Ides of March (probably excellent, starring Gozzers and George Clooney - Clooners? - in a political drama so sexy it makes proportional representation and first-past-the-post sound interesting, and not just as a euphemism. Eh? Eh?)

Go on, admit it: you would.

Drive and Crazy, Stupid, Love are both in cinemas now

REVIEW: CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE

It’s not unfair to suggest that romantic comedies (or rom-coms, as the cool kids say) are ten-a-penny. It’s a sub-genre that forms the perfect date-night fodder. The problem with the format is that for every successful effort, there are a dozen duds. And why? Well, more-often-than-not the rom-com is a genre so saturated with monetary motives, it constantly loses integrity until the rare gem pops up.

REVIEW: WARRIOR
You might sense déjà vu when you come face-to-face with Gavin O’Conner’s tale of underdog turned prized fighter and it’s hard to look past the idea that Warrior is little more than a hybrid of The Fighter, Million Dollar Baby and the Rocky movies rolled into one. However, scratch beneath the clichéd exterior and you’ll discover something a little special with more depth.

My analogue film life - Moleskine Film Journal

wannagotothemovies:

Just a quick post.

As much as I adore all things digital, I keep a film journal to write down all the films I’ve seen in the cinema only. Along with quick reviews I also have pages of doodles and lists that only a film obsessed person would have.

This post is basically a look into some of the pages in my journal.

REVIEW: DRIVE
Unless you’ve been living in a vacuum for the past year, you’ll know that Ryan Gosling is fast becoming Hollywood’s hottest talent. With lead roles in Lars and the Real Girl, Blue Valentine and the imminent Crazy, Stupid Love, the Canadian born actor is renowned for his deep and multi-layered portrayals, but the question is this: does his latest offering expose us to the same raw, gut-wrenching emotion?

REVIEW: TROLL HUNTER
Its existence has been known in the UK for just under a year now and with an imminent, albeit it, limited release, we can finally bear witness to one of the most intriguing films currently out there.Cinema has seen its fair share of ‘found-footage’ movies over the years, stemming from the iconic, micro-budgeted, The Blair Witch Project way back in ‘99. Its massive success inevitably spawned a host of imitators, with successes that include [REC] and Paranormal Activity (along with their respective sequels), which prove the genre still has potential.
