Unscene Heroes : Roger Deakins
Cinema is a complex business. Seemingly straight forward, yet devilishly intricate, but when we view films we tend to, subconsciously or not, gratify the director. After all, he/she is the visionary. The sole creative mind behind an entire project. Aren’t they? In honesty there’s far more to film making than meets the eye. One cannot and should not gift complete appraisal to a Spielberg, a Scorsese or a Coen (or two)…
It was an interesting Oscars 2011. With all the hype at the end of last year surrounding The Social Network,it was the selection of great films that emerged early this year that spoilt David Fincher’s preemptive victory. It’s no secret that The King’s Speech got the most attention and the Oscar buzz, which then became poised to snap up most of the awards it was nominated for.
When I go into a Coen Brothers film I can’t help but have preconceived notions of what to expect, as they set the bar high with such recent films as No Country For Old Men, I was expecting something special. Of course, my expectations aren’t merely based on recent Coen outings, and tend to judge them on their entire careers stemming back to the likes of Fargo, The Big Lebowskiand Miller’s Crossing to mention but a few.
